In 1571 Venice, a female artist comes into conflict with the state when she's commissioned to paint a tribute to the military triumph in the Battle of Lepanto, and chooses to fill her 1000-foot canvas with graphic scenes of suffering, brutality and death -- which does not sit well with the powers that be. British playwright Howard Barker is known for his "Theatre of Catastrophe," which explores the relationship among violence, sex and power, and his "Scenes From an Execution" is a textbook example of the form. Chicago's experimental Runcible Theatre company stages this production at the Royal George. [less-]
