After dazzling audiences in New York and Boston -- and winning the 2013 Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical -- this exciting new staging of "Pippin" comes to town just in time for the 15th anniversary of Broadway In Chicago. This updated version of the Broadway classic infuses the production with amazing acrobatics and wondrous magical feats, along with the music and lyrics of Stephen Schwartz, the award-winning composer of "Wicked" and "Godspell". With classic songs like "Corner of the Sky," "No Time at All," "Magic to Do" and "Extraordinary," and recreated versions of Bob Fosse's original choreography, this sexy and sophisticated version of "Pippin" tells the story of the son of Charlemagne, leader of the Holy Roman Empire, who goes on a death-defying journey to find meaning in life. He encounters love, sex, war and politics, and must ultimately choose between a life that's ordinary or a flash of singular glory. [less-]

Some teens are growing up too fast, while some adults haven't grown up at all. "Dirtbag" takes a knowingly hilarious in-depth look at a handful of those kids and childlike adults -- from asthmatic Larry, who wants nothing more than to score the winning basket, to Kevin, who wants nothing more than for people to stop asking what he's done since college. At this Public House Theatre production -- penned by Chicago's Ryan Burkett -- you'll also meet youngster Kathy, who struggles to understand her friends' attempts at innuendo and grown-up Mia, who searches for the words to say to her coworker on the morning-after. If you've ever had your immaturity immortalized on the internet, or felt like working in a cubicle was just a painful extension of high school, you too might be a "Dirtbag". [less-]

In an era where just about any type of communication can be replaced with the push of a button, it's even harder to connect with others than ever before. That's why sketch duo Honk and the Senator -- made up of a real-life couple, Ryan and Virginia, giving them plenty of firsthand experience with communication breakdowns -- put together the comedic compilation that is "Come Again?" This show seeks the answers to some truly troubling and significant questions -- like will Virginia's best friend "ever" respond to that Facebook message she already read? She's clearly online right now! And what did Ryan's dad mean when he texted "Go Cubes Go" anyway? This cathartic night of relatable comedy (seriously, they hate autocorrect just as much as you do) can be enjoyed at Chicago's Public House Theatre. [less-]

Called "enthralling" and "immensely entertaining" by the "Chicago Sun-Times", the hit solo show starring Ronald Keaton returns to Chicago at the Greenhouse Theater. Based on Winston Churchill's own writings, the play finds the former British prime minister chafing under forced retirement after a shocking loss in the post-World War II election. But when President Harry Truman invites him to speak in the U.S., the famed politician, painter, Nobel Prize-winning author and witty raconteur begins to reflect on his life and times with humor, pride and regret. The inspiring leader who led England through one of its most difficult periods not only shares his political and military history, but also his fondness for whiskey, cigars and women. Keaton's been called one of the city's "top-tier theater veterans" by the "Chicago Tribune." [less-]

This foot-stompin', crowd-pleasin' country jukebox musical celebrates the songs of a true American original -- the Man in Black himself, Johnny Cash. "Ring of Fire" is a song-fueled journey through the music of one of the country's most iconic singer-songwriters. Created by Tony Award winner Richard Maltby Jr. ("Ain't Misbehavin'", "Fosse"), the musical explores Cash's faith, success, struggles and famous romance with fellow performer June Carter Cash through songs like "I Walk the Line," "Folsom Prison Blues" and, of course, "Ring of Fire." This Broadway musical revue cracks Cash's hit-filled songbook wide open, and brings the Man in Black's music, wit and raw power to life on the Mercury Theater Chicago stage. [less-]

Closing out the Steppenwolf Theatre Company's current season is playwright and Obie Award-winning actress Heidi Schreck's "Grand Concourse", a funny and compassionate play that speaks directly to our shared humanity. Running a soup kitchen in the Bronx with an iron spoon, Shelley has lately found her faith floundering and her dedication to work waning. When a motivated -- if a bit capricious -- college dropout by the name of Emma volunteers at the soup kitchen, Shelley's bubbling struggles are brought to a boil. Made up of equal parts heart and humor, this touching and insightful look at everyday life examines faith, forgiveness and responsibility to others on the stage of Chicago's Steppenwolf Downstairs Theatre. In this contemporary, irreverent adaptation of Anton Chekhov's "The Seagull", the famous Russian writer's characters still philosophize on love, art and the pursuit of happiness, but this time with music and mad humor. There's a famous actress whose son, an aspiring theater director, is desperate to make a name for himself on his own, and his muse, the lovely Nina, who falls for his mother's lover, a renowned novelist. Helen Hayes and Barrymore Award-winning playwright Aaron Posner ("The Chosen") turns the original play's famous subtext into scenes and songs, calling "Stupid F**king Bird" "a rough-and-tumble meta-theatrical mash-up." Sideshow Theatre and Carlisle Hart, LLC brings back Posner's profane play for a second run at the Zacek McVay Theater. Come early and experience the "Stupid F##king Lobby," which puts you in the middle of a Russian-style bazaar, where you can haggle over show merchandise, hear live music, play some of Chekhov's favorite board games (probably) and do a shot of vodka, in the traditional Russian way. Israel's up-to-the-minute struggle with Hamas receives a stirring dramatization in "Jihad", in which the conflict is seen through personal points-of-view on each side. The first part of the show provides an unnerving look at a Palestinian leader who trains young suicide bombers, as well as focusing on an Israeli army major, who's both personally and professionally affected by the terrorist's actions. The second part follows the female side of the equation, as Shula, an Orthodox Jew who's just lost her teenage daughter to a bombing, must work her way through her grief to rise above, while Oum Reim, the Hamas mother of the bomber, follows a different path. The result, staged at Chicago's Emanuel Congregation, is a revealing and deeply felt theatrical experience. [less-]

Ponder just how close the relationship was between fellow composers Johannes Brahms and Clara Schumann as you enjoy the beauty of Ravinia. "I am painting a gentle portrait of you," Brahms wrote to Clara Schumann about the radiant slow movement of his First Piano Concerto. You'll hear, however, little that is gentle about the Concerto's epic and earthy opening movement, and the rondo finale is a passionate show of compositional craftsmanship and pianistic skill. Acclaimed Mexican pianist Jorge Federico Osorio brings his brilliant playing to Brahms' monumental work. Chicago has always been full of magic and at one point the magicians of Chicago became famous for their particular style. It's an up-close and personal kind of magic that doesn't have the grandiose spectacle that other acts bring to the table, but is every bit as astonishing. In some ways, it's much more fun since the audience is part of the show. "The Magic Cabaret" brings that golden age of magic, mystery and mischief back to to Chicago audiences hungry for the unusual. When Marty Scorsese wanted a juicy gothic thriller he turned to writer Dennis Lehane. So did Clint Eastwood. And Ben Affleck. In fact, some of the most harrowing, inventive films of the new century -- "Mystic River", "Gone Baby Gone" and "Shutter Island" -- were all inspired by Lehane novels. But great as they are, the flicks pale in comparison to the riveting, live excitement of Lehane's only play "Coronado". This modern-day Greek tragedy tracks three intersecting stories: a recently freed inmate and his father partaking in a deadly battle of wits; a psychiatrist and his patient who are illicitly involved; and two lovers, caught in a love triangle, plotting a murder. Now Making Rain Productions presents this intense look at the dark side of the human spirit. [less-]
