Even as the young women working at The Radium Dial Corporation forged friendships and built self-esteem in a male-dominated working world, their health was secretly being destroyed. This is the central paradox behind "Shining Lives: A Musical", based on the celebrated play "These Shining Lives" by Melanie Marnich (HBO's "Big Love"). In 1922, some 4,000 women found work hand-painting watch dials, oblivious to the harmful effects of the radioactive paint with which they were working. This compelling new musical focuses on four courageous women who, bonded by their workplace experience and mounting health problems, find the courage to stand up to their employers, demanding change and fighting for a better future. Don't miss this transcendent and moving musical tale of working-class heroes on the stage of the Northlight Theatre. [less-]

Adapted from both Tim Burton's celebrated film and the Daniel Wallace novel of the same name, the musical "Big Fish" follows the whimsical, touching story of a teller of tall tales and his son, who wants to know who his father really is. Following a lifetime of spinning yarns of his epic adventures, Edward Bloom has entered his final chapter, compelling his son Will to embark on an adventure of his own -- to unravel his real dad from the myths he's created. "The New York Times" calls "Big Fish" "spectacular," and "Entertainment Weekly" raves that it's "a big, beautiful, glorious show!" With music and lyrics by Tony nominee Andrew Lippa ("The Addams Family") and a book by acclaimed screenwriter John August ("Go, Charlie's Angels"), this rollicking fantasy set in the American South is a tribute to the power of dreaming big. Now you can experience it at The Center for Visual and Performing Arts in Munster. [less-]

The Hypocrites present Anton Chekhov's humorous and affecting tale about "Three Sisters", whose drab, small-town lives pale in comparison to their imagined futures in the big city. Life for the once-privileged Prozorov family feels depressing now that their provincial Russian town is no longer a bustling army outpost. But the women's attempts to improve their crumbling social status show how big dreams can be derailed by petty decisions and daily frustrations -- a lesson that still rings true today. "Three Sisters" is considered one of Chekhov's greatest plays, and you have the chance to see this brilliant work at The Den Theatre in Chicago. [less-]
