A tantalizing mystery lies at its center of "A Map of Virtue", hailed as "one of the most terrifying plays of the past decade" by "The New York Times". Part interview, part comedy, part middle-of-the-night horror story, "A Map of Virtue" is about a shared obsession that leaves a group of friends stranded in the woods. A bird statue is the guide through this symmetrical tale about the limits of our virtues and what we leave behind. One of Gilbert and Sullivan's most beloved comic operas, "The Mikado" is set in the fictional Japanese town of Titipu, where the emperor has made flirting a capital offense. Into the town comes a wandering minstrel, who quickly falls for Yum-Yum, a beautiful young woman who is betrothed to another. The Japanese setting allowed Gilbert and Sullivan to slyly mask their commentary on contemporary British society while serving up their trademark mix of complications and merriment. A smash hit when it played at the Chopin Theatre and Steppenwolf's Garage, this production from The Hypocrites is presented promenade-style, putting you inside the story as you move around the space with the actors. Thought-provoking yet riotously funny, "Rapture, Blister, Burn" is a comedy by Gina Gionfriddo, whose TV work includes writing for the Emmy-nominated Netflix series "House of Cards". It's an impassioned social critique about Catherine, a famous feminist academic returned home to take care of her elderly mother. There, she encounters an old flame and an "ex" best friend, both of whom seem to be excelling at the kind of conventional life Catherine rejected. But first impressions can be very deceiving. Sparks fly as this production at Chicago's Goodman Theatre address an age-old question with fresh insight: What do women really want? [less-]

Chicago has always been full of magic and at one point the magicians of Chicago became famous for their particular style. It's an up-close and personal kind of magic that doesn't have the grandiose spectacle that other acts bring to the table, but is every bit as astonishing. Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Neil Simon provides a peek behind the scenes of TV's Golden Age in this hit Broadway comedy, based on Simon's time as part of the writing team for Sid Caesar's "Your Show of Shows". Set in 1953, the play depicts a harried comedy writing staff frantically scrambling to top each other with gags while vying for the attention of star madman Max Prince. Max's habit of boozing and popping too many pills is growing under the pressures of rising McCarthyism, network executives and sponsors who want him to cut back his "too-smart" staff so they can chase after the "Leave It to Beaver" audience. A skillful mix of nostalgia, laughter and colorful characters, "Laughter on the 23rd Floor" remains an enduring classic from Simon, as evidenced in this new production from First Folio Theatre at Mayslake Hall.
