Instantly recognizable actors and Steppenwolf ensemble members John Mahoney ("Frasier"'s dad, "Hot in Cleveland") and Lois Smith (Adele Stackhouse in "True Blood") star in the U.S. premiere of a new drama that won raves in London for its witty and emotionally rich portrait of a family struggling to come to terms with its past and present. In "The Herd", three generations of a middle-class British family gather for a birthday party, where a pair of unexpected guests light a fuse on long-simmering tensions. Written by award-winning actor Rory Kinnear ("The Imitation Game, Skyfall"), this Chicago production is directed by longtime Steppenwolf member Frank Galati, who took home a pair of Tonys for "The Grapes of Wrath" and was nominated for another for "Ragtime". Few theatrical debuts have trumpeted a writer's genius louder than "The Glass Menagerie", Tennessee Williams' first successful play and the one that catapulted him from obscurity to acclaim. This haunting drama centers on a family -- the devoted but overbearing matriarch Amanda Wingfield, her poet son Tom, and his sickly and extremely shy sister Laura -- struggling to find happiness in their dingy St. Louis apartment during the Depression. A faded remnant of Southern gentility, Amanda is anchored to a bygone era and her insecurities and disappointments make her incapable of allowing her children the freedom to live their own lives. The arrival of a gentleman caller promises hope for the future, but instead their carefully constructed illusions come crashing around them. Full of poetic longing and inspired by Williams' own experiences as a young man in St. Louis, this iconic American classic now comes to the Royal George Theatre. [less-]

Frank Wedekind was man ahead of his time, with his open-minded thoughts on sex causing a scandal during late 19th century Europe. His first major play, "Spring Awakening", was lambasted for its stark portrayals of teenage sexuality and puberty. Now, more than a century later, Fearless Theatre radically revamps Wedekind's work for today's audience, as a group of students party at an abandoned mortuary. There, they try to find each other and themselves through a maze of abuse and hardship. Will they follow the path of those before them or blaze their own trails? [less-]

Forever on the cutting edge of choreography, The Joffrey Ballet was the first dance company to perform at the White House, the first to appear on television and the first to appear on the cover of "Time" magazine. So it should come as little surprise by now that the opportunity to see them present four gorgeous new works at the Cadillac Palace Theatre is something of a must-see event. "New Works" features choreography from Justin Peck, Christopher Wheeldon, Nicolas Blanc and Val Caniparoli, set to music by Philip Glass, Arvo Part, Max Richter and Alexandre Rabinovitch-Barakovsky. "In Creases" was evocatively deemed a "dreamscape that heightens the progress and colors of its score," by "The New York Times", who also hailed "Liturgy" -- another Joffrey premiere in this program -- as "a striking experiment on a high plane." "Evenfall", a work created specifically for The Joffrey Ballet by one of its ballet masters, is a lyrical piece that presents love as a poetic string of memories. Last, "Incantations" is a 27-minute performance set to a meditative score that uses continuous circular movement to evoke a Zen-like sense of spirituality, mysticism and prayer. [less-]

Steppenwolf in Chicago presents a guillotine-sharp, contemporary-sounding satire that morphs into a real tragedy as it tells the true story of a fabulously wealthy, fashion-setting teenage drama queen whose last name could've well been Kardashian. But France's famed 18th-century monarch "Marie Antoinette" has her own issues dealing with fickle fame and fortune, especially as her once-loyal subjects begin to royally despise her in the midst of an economic downturn. Multi-award-winning playwright and Guggenheim Fellow David Adjmi wrote "Marie Antoinette", and "New York" magazine calls his version of the historical drama "marvelous, disturbing, revisionist." Rarely produced sci-fi songfest "Return to the Forbidden Planet" was originally billed as "Shakespeare's forgotten rock-n-roll musical." The script by Bob Carlton is loosely based on the 1956 classic "B" movie "Forbidden Planet" which, in turn, is loosely based on William Shakespeare's "The Tempest". The play features a kitschy setting and a soundtrack full of '50s and '60s rock 'n' roll hits from the Animals, the Byrds, the Beach Boys and more. The campy juke-box musical redux won the Olivier Award for Best Musical when it first opened on London's West End in 1989 and now it makes its Chicago-area premiere at the Jedlicka Performing Arts Center in Cicero. For a play that famously starts arguments -- about sexual harassment, political correctness and the irreconcilable differences between men and women -- one thing is indisputable about David Mamet's "Oleanna": It's a drama of the highest order. Its ferocity so astonished Harold Pinter that he wrote, "There can be no tougher or more unflinching play." Roger Ebert called it "one of the most stimulating experiences I've had in a theater." In this charged two-character drama, a professor and his female student become embroiled in a war of words. Things take a dangerous turn when perceptions differ, and she later accuses him of sexual exploitation. As the serene campus transforms into an explosive battleground, Mamet dares you to choose a side. Now MadKap Productions stages "Oleanna" from the Pulitzer-winning writer of "Glengarry Glen Ross" at Skokie Theatre. [less-]
